Cognitive Activity Kits

Senior person's hands doing a puzzle of a person's head

Our Cognitive Activity Kits have been designed for people living with dementia and their families, friends, or caregivers to use together.  They are designed to help exercise fine motor skills, encourage social engagement, and keep the brain active. Available themes are dogs, cats, farm, homemaker, handyman, and great outdoors.

There is no right or wrong way to use this kit. Explore the various activities and find one that meets the interests, skills and abilities of the person living with dementia. Ask them if they would like to do this activity and encourage them while doing it.  If an activity is not engaging your loved one, that’s okay! Try another activity. You can always revisit the activity at another time.

You can use the photo and activity cards to have a conversation or play sorting games, watch the DVD together and talk about the videos, do the jigsaw puzzle, read the book, play I Spy with the Busy Bottle, or do the reusable activity sheets for colouring, sudoku and word searches.

Also included is a wooden sensory fidget toy, tips for use, and a list of additional resources available at Wellington County Library.

Kits are available off the shelf at specific branches or can be requested for pick up at any branch. Before returning the kit, please clean off the reusable activity sheets with the included dry erasers. Kits must be returned inside the library at the Circulation desk.
