Go Green with Your Library

Tree growing out of an open book

Let's celebrate Earth Month! Libraries are champions of sustainability—by sharing books and resources, we help reduce waste and lower our environmental impact. From energy-efficient buildings and digital materials to recycling programmes and eco-friendly events, your library is working hard to support a greener planet. Small choices add up—let’s build a sustainable future together!

1. Shared Resources

  • Our community spaces and resources support a circular economy.
  • The average 300-page book can take 1,500 litres of water to produce. Borrowing library books reduces water and paper consumption and cuts down on packaging and shipping waste.

2. Recycling and Upcycling

  • Our checkout receipts have switched to recyclable paper - or opt for paperless with an emailed receipt or online account.
  • Household battery recycling is available at every branch.
  • Discarded items are used for crafts; donated to local organizations and groups where possible; and recycled where possible.

4. Sustainable Programming and Education

  • Learn about climate change, sustainability, and conservation with our books, films, and online resources.
  • Borrow a Home Energy kit to help you understanding how your home uses energy, the types of energy it uses, and where savings can be made.
  • Attend workshops on gardening, recycling, sewing, and other eco-friendly topics.

5. Reducing Single-Use Waste

  • We encourage reusable water bottles and book bags, including offering water fountains and refill stations.
  • Instead of replacing a damaged library card, sign into the MyWCL app for a permanent digital library card - available from Apple or Google Play

6. Digital Resources

  • Borrow eBooks, audiobooks, streaming movies, or online resources—all cut down on physical production and transportation.
